Nationwide Business Class to London from 42K Miles One-Way

Boston (BOS) to London (LHR), Business, One Way.

Fly British Airways business class to London from 42,000 Japan Airlines miles plus about $220 in taxes one-way, featured out of Boston and available from more than two dozen U.S. and Canadian cities. The same nonstop seat runs $3,108 in cash right now, which works out to 6.9 cents per point — and it beats booking the identical flight with British Airways Avios, where the fare is 88,000 miles and taxes jump past $410. Availability runs through next July, with the best stretch from November to March, including Christmas and New Year's.

  1. Open a Japan Airlines Mileage Bank account first, before anything else. Your account must be at least 7 days old before you can redeem miles, and brand-new accounts often cannot run award searches for the first day or two.

  2. Find the availability on American's website — it is by far the easiest tool for searching this award space. Go to aa.com, choose "Redeem miles," select one-way and your passenger count, and set Class to "Business / First."

  3. After searching, click the "Calendar" tab to see a full month at once, then filter for nonstop flights. Any date showing 57,500 miles each way on American is the same seat you can book for 42,000 through JAL. Write down the dates and flight numbers.

  4. Transfer your points to JAL. Bilt and Rove go 1:1, so you need 42,000 points. Capital One transfers at 1,000:750, so you would need 56,000 Capital One miles. Only transfer once you have confirmed availability — transfers are one-way and cannot be reversed.

  5. Log in to your JAL account and select "JMB Partner Airlines Award Tickets." Choose British Airways, pick one-way or round-trip, select Business Class and your passenger count, then search the exact dates you found on American.

  6. Confirm the price lands at 42,000 miles from the 42K cities or 60,000 from the rest, then pay roughly $220 in taxes with any card. JAL's site can be temperamental — if it logs you out mid-search, log back in and try again rather than assuming the space is gone.

  7. If JAL will not cooperate, run the same dates through Cathay Pacific instead. Cathay charges 63,000 to 93,000 miles with similar taxes, and accepts transfers from Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Citi, and Rove.
